State of Origin: WHY YOU NO IN OFF SEASON?!

Howdily doodily neighbourinohs!

So I missed another week of posting - LAST WEEK OF UNI DON'T EAT ME D:

Now that time is getting on a bit from Storm's big win, I'm guessing we're all now feeling some pretty bad NRL withdrawls.

This is one of the many reasons I think that State of Origin should be moved to the off-season.

Another reason is that it seriously disrupts the premiership, especially for certain teams. You only have to look at the Broncos or the Storm mid-season slump that felt like it lasted a lifetime. Sure, the best players should get picked for State of Origin, but when certain teams in particular are hit pretty hard and are scrambling to find a good enough team to put out on the weekend, you have to question the timing of the State of Origin contest.

More to the point, this also increases the likelihood of injuries to certain players (e.g. Billy Slater) who work hard in every game they play, suffer serious injury and are written off for weeks on end. Now, Storm is much more than the Big Three, but when they are getting more and more exhausted in the middle of the season I think the blokes in Sydney really have some thinking to do. At the beginning of Season 2012, Brisbane Broncos looked to be set for an excellent season, but following the State of Origin contests, they just scraped through into the finals.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

My Mum's tipping method

Hey guys

So it's the off-season, the moment of emptiness when you turn to the back of the paper and it's all about the V8s or the Spring Carnival -sigh-

BUT with off-season comes off-season blog posts; things somewhat related to the NRL that crop up in my daily life.

This week - my mother's tipping method.

Now, sometimes I feel bad for my mum. She's constantly surrounded by die-hard Storm fans and yet she has no clue how Rugby works.

She has no idea who the good teams are (though she seems to have picked up that Billy Slater is king!)

How then, I hear you ask, does she manage to do her footy tipping each week? Simple. She goes on the mascots.

If West Tigers are going up against Rabbitohs, she'll pick tigers, because logically they should be able to beat a team of bunnies. If Panthers are playing Eels, she finds it difficult, as it depends whether the match was on land or in water.

It seemed to work well in the Grand Final (though she didn't have much choice in who she was going for). She thought Storm would win over Bulldogs, because not many dogs survive after they've been THUNDERSTRUCK.

Doesn't work so well in other codes though. If Melbourne Victory are playing Perth Glory, or Sydney Swans are playing Carlton Blues. That's when she does the blind pick.

It's times like these I'm glad I got my footy passion from the males in the family.

See ya next week, and follow me on Twitter! (@ItsStormGirl)
